If You Never Come to Me

Rehearsal Tracks

CONCERT INTRODUCTION

Barbara Garlock 2018

From the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, we bring you several numbers this afternoon by Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Brazilian composer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and singer, who was the driving force that internationalized bossa nova in the early ‘60s.

This song, If You Never Come to Me, was composed by Jobim in 1964 with lyrics by Aloysio de Oliveira and titled Inutil Paisagem (Useless Landscape).

Ray Gilbert wrote the English lyrics – a bit nihilistic we admit – wherein a lover laments the pointlessness of beautiful views or wonderful dreams without the one who makes it all worthwhile.

The song was featured on the 1968 Grammy-nominated album, descriptively titled, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim.
