Zorongo

CONCERT INTRODUCTION

Federico García Lorca, a Spanish poet, dramatist and theatre director, is the composer of El Zorongo.  A Zorongo is a traditional form of dance and singing from the Andalusian region of Spain.  Somewhat akin to the musical style of the blues in the US, Zorongos are essentially a musical form that convey lament. Recorded in 1931, this is one of the most famous examples of the region's musical heritage.

On paper, the lyrics are the rich, concise words one would expect from a Spanish poem.  But rest assured that Spanish fluency is not required to follow the sentiment and longing of the most universal of messages, in what is ultimately--a love song.
